sunshine_queen: Tricia being fierce, as always. (Lauroslin- short-sighed- mefan)
So, I wrote a pretty amusing post (I thought) detailing both Dr Quinn squee (SHE AND SULLY GOT MARRIED, it was as crazy and delightful as you might expect) and the drama involving my phone (my unlimited web is not at all unlimited, it fact it is very limited, and I'm almost done FOR THE MONTH and I have to believe they mean 'some four-week period that ends soonish' rather than 'the whole month of November,' but who even knows. I certainly didn't intend to leave France being all 'AMERICA IS THE GREATEST' but goddamn, there have been so many little inefficiencies or just plain *lies* that I've never dealt with in the US and it makes me want to scream.

I also can't believe that the people dealing with our internet situation just have no idea when France Telecom is coming, because what kind of company just says 'oh, we'll come construct a line sometime' and then I think, no, it's totally possible, because: France. And then I fume.

So on one hand, I love being here- I have a lot of fun when I'm with my friends, and I love going into Paris and just hanging out or trying to find things and wandering around and accidentally stumbling on really historic things- and on the other I'm counting the days until I get to go home (forty!). This is so unlike when I went to college it's ridiculous.

Since I'm sitting here waiting to go to class (and then between those classes I plan on posting this, and then going into Paris!) I just looked at my contract and it looks like I signed on the 10th? So maybe the month ends then? In which case being near the end wouldn't be too awful, it would be bearable and in fact understandable? Sweet god I hope so. (I mean, unlimited should still mean unlimited, but whatever, I'm okay being at 160/200 'Mo' if it starts up again soon. I wish I knew how to look this up! I'm going to try going on the website and if I can't figure it out there I'll call them.

Ugh, I'm remembering what it was like before when I didn't have internet! I'm literally breaking up errands so that I'll have something to do other days. "The grocery store is closed for lunch? No, don't come back later- go tomorrow, it'll give you something to do." "Go to the post office on Thursday! It'll give you something to do!" The people in the office have flat out said "you'll have internet when you get it," which, wow, thanks! Ugh.

Class-wise, I seem to have just two speeds: really awesome classes that are enjoyable and want to chat, and classes that want to say nothing. I'd say that it was to be expected, but sometimes the two wildly different groups are from the same class! Same age, same level of English. I'm pretty sure everyone got really conflicting reports on what I was like- I had a great time with the first group, and then in the second group, when they refused to talk I was like FINE WE WILL LOOK AT A WORK SHEET AND ANSWER DISCUSSION QUESTIONS AND IF YOU DON'T VOLUNTEER I WILL CALL ON YOU. I also told them that I get paid whether they practice their English or not, so it's up to them to improve. Kids are hard, yo.

And now I'm getting text messages from my phone company saying that my web "illimite" is actually limite and I'm close to it? Or something? I'm so screwed, man.

I have no internet in my common room for some reason, so I'm like, no big, I'll go sit outside the teacher's lounge. So I am, in GALE-FORCE WINDS. I have no idea what's going on but clearly this plan is not long for this world.

Internet isn't working, which is tragically sad and I'd forgotten how rotten it is not to have internet, even if it's just in the common room attached to the ethernet cable.

Two nights ago my friends Katie and Becky came over really late and spent the night! That was an adventure, as I have a single bed and I made a little bedding nest for Katie on the floor. I slept super poorly for some reason- not for lack of room, but because it was so hot- but having them over was awesome. Yesterday morning we got up around ten, went to the closest boulangerie for breakfast, and then went into Paris.

I tried to get a Longchamp bag on Tuesday, but I failed to take into account that it was Toussaint and, of course, 50% of things were closed and Longchamp was no exception. So yesterday we went back to that store... and found out that it didn't have the bag I wanted in the color I wanted (dark purple.) So we had to trek another twenty minutes to the big shopping center, Galleries Lafayette. Disappointingly, it was the location that isn't breathtakingly beautiful. Anyway, I finally got my bag and it's exactly what I've wanted for so like, three years! Win.

Then we went over to the American Church because we had heard they were having a bazaar. There were some cool things- I bought a neat little leather purse for my sister for Christmas and two little leather change purses- but I was really surprised by the people. Some of the ladies working there were absolutely lovely- and some of them were totally cold. Weirdest of all was that the few times I mentioned that I was American and I was delighted to be at an American event, I was told that the community at the American Church was mainly for people who were going to be in France for several years (subtext: not for you.) I was really surprised at that- for one, I hadn't said anything about what I was doing in France, so I could've totally been living there for reals or whatever, and secondly it delivered really judgmentally. I'm sorry I'm not married to a Frenchman was dragged to a foreign country, American Wives of European Husbands, and I don't want to join your lame groups anyway.

Some other assistants arrived and also perused the bazaar, and then we left, got some lunch/dinner fixins at a grocery store, and then ate in a park while little old men played Petanque. It was cloudy by that point but it has been (gloriously) unseasonably warm to my never-ending delight, and I had a really good time! I even managed to get home before dark, which never happens lately, and I would be on top of the world right now if the internet was working... but even without it, I'm doing okay! I finally figured out how to play Spider Solitaire and I've been listening to my iTunes and god, I am so much better than I was a few weeks ago and it's awesome. Tonight Katie and Becky are coming back for a pizza party because we have a Pizza Hut in town and we're all intrigued.

My Mom: What did you do today?
Me: [Wrote highly indulgent fic wherein Sam and Caprica are married and have three children and they have adventures on the metro] Um, went to the grocery store.

Today, while not lovely as in clear blue skies, there was a bit of sun, and when I went to the grocery store (THIRD ATTEMPT IN AS MANY DAYS) it was only 61 degrees so I could wear my flip flops and I was like sweet joyous temperature! Never leave me!

I got some American-style sandwich bread, mostly out of curiosity. I've been eating my PB&Js on these rolls that taste like cake. It was tasty bread. I also caved and got the Skippy peanut butter for 4,80 euros after trying to eat some of the peanut butter I got from England with a spoon. It was okay but definitely not awesome. The Skippy? Compared to the Jif it's not great and it's totally highway robbery but any port in a storm. I also got some red currant jelly by accident because the drawing looked like cranberries and I was like huh I had no idea they called them 'groseilles' and it wasn't until about a half hour ago that I remembered the word for cranberries is 'canneberge' and I had to look up what groseilles were. I feel like it'll have some potential when it's chilled.

Classes start again tomorrow (for two days, and then it's the weekend!), and of course now that I actually have to be up at a certain time tomorrow, my body is like OH MY GOD I AM ACTUALLY EXHAUSTED BECAUSE I REFUSE TO SLEEP WHEN I CAN. I'm up every day at 8:30 because, you know, why not, even if I stay up til 1:30 watching Michaela Quinn judge people (I don't know if I'm getting snarkier as I get more comfortable with the characters [I am aware how weird and creepy that sounds] or if the show is just crossing over from endearingly campy to borderline awful but this! show! and! its! ridiculous! plots!)

I defy you to find a more perfect movie. Please God let it show up on the internet.

Oh hey y'all! Since I last posted, all kinds of awesome things have happened, and not just ones I've watched on Dr Quinn (though that woman does more stuff than any one person should.) I went to England to visit Melissa and had the greatest of all possible trips. The town where she's studying, Canterbury, is precious and adorable and full of all kinds of awesome stuff. We went to London for a day and it was ridiculously amazing. We went to this little seaside town too called Whitstable, and it was also charming. Best of all, I got to see Missa, who I have not seen since JULY.

In other important news, while we were together, we talked about whether or not we really wanted to stay in Europe over winter break as originally planned, and realized we totally didn't, and we found flights mostly together (the important, long, trans-Atlantic ones are together both ways) and so now I am going home on December 19th and I am so very excited it makes me giddy to think about it.

Also: I GOT PAID. I got paid, to my bank account, in euros, and now I am no longer just putting everything on my credit card! It is such an incredible feeling, even if in Europe they don't like you using your debit card the way you do in the US. (Damn you, cash!) This means that today I was able to go purchase a Navigo pass for the entire month, so now I won't have to grimace and groan every time I go into Paris! In other personal growth news, I went grocery shopping yesterday and not a single tear was shed. This is great progress.

The Mexican assistant has been a lot nicer to me lately, which is great, but I totally confused her by telling her I didn't want to go out tonight. I can't help that when it gets dark (which it almost is already and it's not even six yet) I totally feel like it's time to go home and batten down the hatches! I also can't help that I don't really care about celebrating Halloween now that I can't trick or treat.

In honor of All Hallow's Eve, I'm inviting trick-or-treaters to my 'door'.

Comment "trick-or-treat" to this post and I'll give you a treat. Treats can be anything that strikes my fancy (pics of fave actors or pairings, one sentence fics, graphics, a few words why I'm glad to have you on my flist, etc. etc.). The more "houses" to visit the more fun it'll be, so go ahead, open your journal and help spread the fun!

Your daily dose of Dr Quinn squee )

Today I had the MOST MAGICAL DAY. I went to Paris and met up with Katie, the awesome girl I met at my hostel and who I've been friends with ever since, and her friend Becky. We walked all over and the weather was perfect- sunny and in the 60s- and I already knew Katie and I got along like a house afire but Becky was equally awesome so the entire day was just fantastic and I had such a great time! Seriously the best day I've had since I've been here. There are a bunch of (really gorgeous) photos on facebook that I put up. Also, I am looking crazy thin in pictures lately and it is doing much to improve my mood.

I feel like Rory Gilmore when she was all excited about getting the house to herself for the weekend- the German assistant went home yesterday, the French polytechnic boy assistant went home today, and my Mexican roommate (who has been nicer lately, yay!) has gone to Paris for the evening, and here are my thoughts, in this order:

- I can stay online and no one will judge me!
- I can watch Dr Quinn!
- I can take a shower and wash my hair!
- I can make hot dogs for dinner!

Like, aside from the staying online forever, having people around wouldn't prevent me from doing most of this list, but just being alone in this way- with internet!- is kind of magical. (I would go into Paris but (1) I don't have plans with anyone, (2) I hate going out late and it's also cold! and (3) I should not spend the 7,90 to go into Paris without a good reason, at least not until I get paid.)

I'm realizing that my internet situation might be very precarious over the break. I emailed the guy in charge (you know, the one who said I'd have wifi this week) and he said that the internet would work during the break but I still don't have wifi so I'm a bit concerned. I'm hoping at the very least the internet in the teacher's lounge will work so I can sit outside and check stuff at least a little, but we'll see! At least I'm going to see Missa on Tuesday!

I really enjoyed my last class today! I had one class with Chantal that was kind of awkward, and then a class with a teacher I just met, and people had warned me she was kind of crazy and I saw it, and the kids were like 15 so they were already kind of resistant to being in class in general and the teacher totally mishandled them, but then my last class, which was the same teacher and the other half of the same group of 15/16 year olds as before, showed up and they were AMAZING. They listened and had questions and understood what I was saying and talked to me and it was such a nice way to end classes for until November 3rd!
