So come to me my love
I'll tap into your strength and drain it dry
Can never have enough
For you I'd burn the length and breadth of sky
The lyrics and the music to this piece are so haunting. Vienna Teng uses her voice and powerful imagery to slam listeners.
Motherland by Natalie Merchant
Now come on shotgun bride
What makes me envy your life?
Faceless, nameless, innocent, blameless and free
What's that like to be?
The women she describes in this song- the shotgun bride, the five-n-dime queen- sound so fragile, and the melody matches and Natalie's voice is so strong, and it's just gorgeous.
My Father's Gun by Elton John
As soon as this is over we'll go home
To plant the seeds of justice in our bones
To watch the children growing and see the women sewing
There'll be laughter when the bells of freedom ring
Kind of odd for Elton John to be singing about the Confederacy, but it's such a pretty song.
Movin' Out (Anthony's song) by Billy Joel
It seems such a waste of time
If that's what it's all about
If that's movin' up then I'm movin' out.
Snappy beat, catchy lyrics, and, above all? Story song. I love me some story songs. And some Billy Joel. This song gives me a heart attack-ack-ack-ack-ack-ack.
My Skin by Natalie Merchant
Do you remember the way that you touched me before
All the trembling sweetness I loved and adored
Your face-saving promises whispered like prayers
I don't need them
I got this song after listening to the free trial of Alias radio last year- it's from the scene where Sloane tells Emily the truth, and the lyrics are so beautiful and fitting and I just love it.
If you want to play, comment! It's fun.
