To be clear: I absolutely think the Writers' Guild is doing what's necessary. I'm not one to think that the Little Guy is right often, but this time.... fuck yes.
That said: WAIIIIIIIIL.
I mean, I may not have the deep, all-encompassing love for TV shows that I watch now as I did for Alias, but I still like them. Thursday is like, my favorite day because of 30 Rock Grey's and Betty. And I love Pushing Daisies and House and Brothers and Sisters. So this kind of alarms me. NEW SHOWS NEW SHOWS.
However, now to bitch about Old TV.
(ETA: This rant was going to be small, and then, omg, I got filled with rage and now it's long and full of caps.)
I love GG. It's like my second favorite series, and I am not kidding. I think for the most part it's clever and witty and delightful and I love Lorelai Gilmore more than I can say. And I loved Luke. Always. Allllllways loved Luke. Which is weird, because he's not all Ken-doll pretty and perfect, and he's not sleek and smooth and rich. He's average, he's cute, HE WEARS FLANNEL. The men I like usually wear oxfords (if not straight up uniforms. At the tender age of three I fell in love with Georg von Trapp. Give me a man in formal wear and I am yours.) But Luke? Not so much. But it didn't matter, because he was good and kind and wonderful and in love with Lorelai, so it was great.
Until now.
I know that a lot of times when couples on show get together it's all jump-the-sharkish, but I really didn't feel Luke/Lorelai was doing that. I think that there was enough going on elsewhere to keep the show from going down the path of The Luke and Lorelai kissing Hour Mwah. But no. They couldn't just have them get MARRIED and BE HAPPY. Where's the fun in that? There IS none. So they bring in April.
I don't mind the idea of April. I don't. I even like the name April, even though it's kind of a dumb name. But the actual character of April? She is Rory 2.0. And while I love Rory, I also HATE Rory, in a fashion similar to the way I hate(d) Sydney. So seeing the same precocious intelligence on a kid that was (A) not as cute as Alexis Bledel and (B) Coming out of nowhere was TOTALLY ANNOYING.
So, they bring on April. I think they basically handled Luke's reaction the way Luke would've reacted. I think Lorelai was stupid for not, oh, I don't know. VOCALIZING HER EMOTIONS. But whatev. Fine. April's in the picture.
But Anna. I could tolerate stupid April if it weren't for wretched, obnoxious, holier-than-thou, I'm Diet Lorelai Anna. First she bitches at Luke because... he thinks that April spending her day AT THE DINER was a bad idea. Sure, he really didn't want her to come because he was being a douche and lying to Lorelai, but also? SENDING A KID TO A DINER FOR THE DAY IS STUPID. STUPID! And then! And then stupid April's birthday party!
(I should preface this mini rant by saying that I didn't actually see this part of the episode, BUT I READ THE RECAP AND MY ANGER!!!!!!! IT STANDS!)
Fucking Anna has the nerve to snot at Lorelai about giving her kid a good time. WHAT KIND OF MOTHER DOESN'T THROW THEIR OWN KID A PARTY, AND THEN BITCHES WHEN SHE GETS ONE. I mean, I get it. I do. She doesn't want April to get... attached to Lorelai, even though SHE MET HER ONCE. Also? She is Luke's girlfriend. Therefore, she should have already MET April, and theoretically, April could have been spending EVERY SECOND SHE WAS WITH LUKE WITH LORELAI AS WELL. So get the fuck off your high horse, Anna. Talking about how it is as a single mom. Lorelai was one too, bitch.
AND THEN LUKE. Luke just sitting on his hands about the whole situation, and being an overall asshole and ignoring how Lorelai feels and postponing the wedding and keeping her from April and coddling Liz all the freaking time and HATE HATE HATE!
I LOVED LUKE/LORELAI. I WANTED THEM TO GET TOGETHER SINCE I FIRST STARTED WATCHING TWO SUMMERS AGO. I WANTED THEM TO GET TOGETHER AND GET MARRIED AND HAVE BABIES OR NOT HAVE BABIES AND BE HAPPY AND BANTER AND HANG OUT AT THE DINER FOR ALL ETERNITY!!
And now? I want Lorelai to get the hell out of Dodge and leave Luke to his obnoxious, aloof daughter, the horrendous ex-girlfriend WHO DECIDED NOT TO TELL YOU SHE WAS PREGNANT (and that she was sleeping with two other guys) (and then you decided to lie to your own girlfriend about having a kid), your stupid Renaissance Faire jewelery maker TRAINWRECK of a sister, your IDIOT brother in law, AND JESS, WHO TURNED OUT THE BE THE BEST DANES OF THE BUNCH!
OMFG YOU MADE ME LIKE JESS BEST!
FUCK YOU, GILMORE GIRLS. FUCK! YOU!

Date: 2007-11-06 03:56 am (UTC)I love April, but Anna BREAKS MY BRAIN WITH FURY. The end of the birthday party episode ruins me.
And yet! I will always, always love Luke/Lorelai (and Luke, for all his very crappy season six conduct) with my whole heart. I thought they ultimately did a really good job fixing them in season seven. Which may or may not more or less make up for the devastation. I'm not quite sure yet.

Date: 2007-11-06 04:02 am (UTC)Anna! I can't- I just- I CAN'T FORMULATE SENTENCES I HATE HER SO MUCH.
Maybe L/L will make up for things, BUT I DON'T KNOW. I am so, so angry.

Date: 2007-11-06 04:11 am (UTC)I'm the same way; I'm not really into any serial shows right now. I like Gossip Girl, but that's about it. Still, it would be terrible if the WGA strike lasts for FIVE MONTHS.
Lorelai was the reason why I watched GG. It should have just been singular, grrr Rory's an ax wound. They only threw in April to throw another roadblock at the Java Junkies...and maybe it was Amy's way of sinking the show right before she left.
I'm in the 0.02% minority, but I like Lorelai/Chris and Rory/Dean. I like how Lorelai/Chris are there for each other in the end, and Rory will never find a better guy than Dean. Not Jess the arrogant asshole, not Logan who represents everything about the upper-class society she claimed to detest. The hypocrisy of the characters killed the show to me.

Date: 2007-11-06 04:18 am (UTC)Well... Rory never claimed to detest the upper class. That was Lorelai. Rory wanted to go to Chilton and Yale, which, while both very good schools, were schools for the upper echelons of society, like it or not. So I don't think her dating Logan is hypocrisy. Her personality got a bit weird and unlike the Rory we knew, but it wasn't hypocrisy (at least about the upper class.) And I adooooore Logan.
I did like Rory/Dean though. And I DESPISED Jess. Until, you know, now, when he was mostly decent this season.

Date: 2007-11-06 04:32 am (UTC)I like Milo and Jared much better on Heroes and Supernatural, respectively. And haha, if only Jared's character was named "Dean." XD

Date: 2007-11-06 04:39 am (UTC)How? She wasn't dating Logan because he was rich.

Date: 2007-11-06 08:03 am (UTC)Oh, GG. So much rage and love. I completely agree ont he entire thing. The last couple season just made me really dislike the show. They killed it. I was comfortable with Lorelai/Luke until they turned it into the Storyline form Hell. And then I was okay with Logan when he was first introduced, and they made me dislike him too in the end. Last season I was Lorelai/Chris, I swear to god.
I hated Jess. I'm still so much more Rory/Dean than I am Rory/Jess, because R/D was possibly the most adorable and tragic thing ever.

Date: 2007-11-06 03:01 pm (UTC)The end of season 6 up until near-ish the end of 7 is just rubbish. It's so sad how such a good show can be so badly ruined. It rights itself, in the end, but it's always going to be darkened by that period.
I agree, I never liked Jess all that much. Especially not with Rory. I adore Rory, but she was stupid to let go of Dean. Luke and Lorelai belong together and I agree with everything you said about him. My main love in this show, though, is the relationship and friendship between Lorelai and Rory, and when that went sour in season 5 that was the beginning of the badness, really. 1-4 are faultless.

Date: 2007-11-06 03:27 pm (UTC)See, I just loooove Logan. He's a good guy, overall, and the main downside to him is his family. And the fact that he's a bit short. But other than that? He's handsome AND HE IS LOADED. Hardcore, serious cash and assets, love, and that is what I find attractive about Logan.
I WILL NEVER BE LORELAI/CHRIS. I think. I often say things like that and then, um, go back on my word. So we'll see when I eventually see Season Seven.
I haaaaaaated Jess. Hate! So tolerating him now is weirding me out. Also, I can't believe three people on my flist are Rory/Dean. I didn't think anyone but me thought they were cute.

Date: 2007-11-07 09:44 am (UTC)Jess is made of awesome. And hot. Mmm.
But, yes, Luke/Lorelai redeems itself. The scar of season six will always be there, but time allows for healing to begin. Just trust in GG, my friend. :D

Date: 2007-11-07 05:55 pm (UTC)He is the whiniest, sleaziest, most hypocritical excuse for a human being.
Jess. Jess Jess JESS JESS JESS JESS JESS.
Logan was innucuous and could by BIRKIN BAGS. Jess made trouble FOR NO GOOD REASON. He was rude TO EVERYONE. Including Rory! All the goddamn time! He was rude to Lorelai and Luke and Emily and Richard and HIS OWN GIRLFRIEND. And what's worse? He proved that it was just a stupid teenage phase by his behavior in season six, so he wasn't born evil and unnecessarily rude without any sense of social decency, he CHOSE to act that way- FOR NO GOOD REASON.
Thaaaaanks, Cryss. All good will I'd found for Jess is now gone.

Date: 2007-11-07 10:33 pm (UTC)Yeah, but Logan was whiny and ungrateful, too. Admit it. :P
"Life sucks, Rory. Daddy ignores me and wants to turn me into a carbon copy of himself" and then "Ooh, pretty private jet. I'll fly across the country/world to enjoy immature adventures with my buddies".
Find the good will, find it! Or else, think of Lorelai. Think of pop culture quips. Think of pre-s6 Luke/Lorelai banter.
