I am in an inexplicably cheery mood! Which is bizarre, seeing as I am terrified of my French class and therefore spent the afternoon reading people's articles on Atonement and thinking thinky thoughts about it, like about Cecilia's role and pondering Briony and fic and how there is no fic but I want some so bad but I dare not write it because I couldn't do it justice and now I have decided to share my good mood by giving you songs! Mostly happy ones! :-D

Suddenly I See- KT Tunstall

This is a song that always puts a big smile on my face, but I have a real affinity for KT Tunstall. Also, in my mind, I fanvid it for Irina. That's how I work.

C'mon, C'mon- The Von Bondies

Someone did vid this, and it was amazing, so I downloaded it. And I listen to it a lot because of the beat. It's powerful!

Hold Me Tight- Evan Rachel Wood

My favorite song from Across the Universe. ERW really impressed me.

Hurry! It's Lovely Up Here- Barbra Streisand

Babs. Singing to flowers. There is nothing to not like about this.

Don't Ask Me Why- Billy Joel

Another Irina song. But you know how some singer/songwriters write for a particular TV show? Like Coldplay and Alias, and Vienna Teng and The X-Files? No? Well, it happens. And Billy Joel foresaw the character of Irina Derevko and wrote for her.

Dirty Magazine- Bree Sharp

So, I'm not going to lie. I mainly uploaded this for [livejournal.com profile] scullybabe626, because she put up a dirty girl play list, and this is a dirty girl song. For realz. And Bree Sharp is just made of win.

Short Skirt, Long Jacket- Cake

Another awesome song. That's all I have.

Where You Lead- Carole King and Louise Goffin

The theme song for the Gilmore Girls! I sing it ALL THE TIME. The credits are arguably my favorite part of 80% of the episodes. I sing along with my whole heart.

You Never Can Tell- Chuck Berry

Come on, Pulp Fiction fans. Help me out.

Shining Star- Earth Wind and Fire

Because you're a shining star, no matter who you are.

Here's to Love- Ewan McGregor and Renee Zellweger

From Down With Love! This is the best part of that movie. Aside from Melissa George's cameo. And every part with Sarah Paulson and David Hyde Pierce.

If you were going to pastiche Atonement with Alias, how would you do it? (Using Alias characters would entertain me the most.)

Oh, and also, wonderfully, Billy Joel really DID write one of his songs for a fictional character -- "Big Man on Mulberry Street" is a song he wrote from the POV of Moonlighting's David Addison. They used it on the show.

Billy Joel = big fanboy.

Shut up. He did write that for Addison?! I knew they used it but, aieee! That just delights me.

And by pastiche, you mean, if I were to use the story of Atonement, how would I fit Alias characters into it?

Joel really did write it for them. I think the episode in which the song was used was actually the song's debut.

I guess that is what I mean with Alias/Atonement -- if you were going to write an Alias fic in the model of Atonement (not maybe the exact plot, but the themes, the general dramatic thrust, etc.), what would you do with it?

I thought that's what you meant, so I've been thinking about it. I've been stuck between using Jack and Irina and Syd and Vaughn, because Atonement really has the more desperately heartwrenching love story right in the middle of it. I think I'd go with Syd and Vaughn, though, just for the conveniently placed Nadia, who is the younger sister. The importance of having the Briony role remain a sister and not just a friend is that it makes it that much more painful: this is a relative who has not only ruined the life of your beloved, but your life by extension. (Because Briony is a life-ruiner.)

My personal favorite theme in Atonement is the importance of water, so I'd love to keep that. And the colors, like Briony always wearing white. However, if it was an Alias story, it'd have to be in modern times, so it'd be tricky. The other tricky part is the fact that Briony once had a crush on Robbie.

So. I guess... I don't know. So much of Atonement is rooted in Briony really not understanding what is going on, and Nadia is, duh, older. I guess if she had a radically wrong interpretation of events- like when Vaughn punched Syd in the mouth and ran off, but Syd knew what he was doing- then that could be sort of what happened. But since Briony's testimony as the closest thing to an eye-witness of this horrible crime got Robbie sent to jail, and then enlisted in the army with no hope of advancement in the ranks, there's no real equivalent for that for Vaughn. I guess just... if Nadia were to accuse Vaughn of something, and her word superceded all others- like, if she caught him doing something that appeared to be a betrayal of the government while on a mission, and she felt compelled to report him in order to protect her sister, and then Vaughn was locked up... that would kind of be it?

It's not just that Robbie was just locked up, and then offered enlistment. When he was in jail, he wasn't allowed to get visits from Cecilia because he was labelled as a sex-maniac and therefore couldn't be "overstimulated." Their letters were censored. They got to see each other once in person after that, and then it was just letters sent to and from the front, talking about their future. There isn't really a way to do that to Vaughn... maybe under the patriot act? But then he'd never be let out, ever. And they definitely wouldn't send him to the front.

I guess the closest I could get would be: someone tells what they believe to be true to the authority, and it forever thwarts Syd and Vaughn from being together or really even communicating ever again.

But if you could do better, please tell me! I really struggled with this, and I'm sure you have clever ideas.

Actually, I'd take one tiny step away from the source to maximize the pain in Alias terms. I'd make the central pairing Jack/Irina (or possibly Jack/Nadia, b/c it could work too) -- and I'd make Sydney the accuser. Because Sydney has so profoundly distrusted her father and mother during the years, it would be very easy to envision a scenario in which she gets one of them jailed and entirely beyond the reach of the other. And the pain of a child's (or possibly sister's) betrayal would be just devastating.

You could also make the accuser Vaughn, believing he acted in Syd's best interest, and then have Sydney in the position of knowing that her parents are going through hell, but she cannot free them without condemning her well-meaning lover to the same fate.

Oooh, that would work, wouldn't it?

I'd say that you really, really have something with the Vaughn-idea, but I wonder if he'd actually make an accusation without talking to her first. But.... hm. The more I think about, the more it could work. Briony felt that she was Cecilia's protector, and that she was working in her sister's best interest, and it would be the same for Vaughn. And there's so much that could be misinterpreted in their world...

However, in terms of using the accuser's guilt as a central theme (which is Atonement's main number,) you couldn't go wrong using Sydney as the accuser. Briony felt that what she was doing was right, and Sydney always feels that way. However, when she realizes what she's done, and how irrevocably she's ruined the lives of people, it's a crippling guilt that... ruins her life.

So, are you going to write this?
