So, I didn't get housing for next semester. This is a big problem, because I want to study abroad next spring, and getting an apartment for just a semester and then subletting would be retarded, and I don't know what to do. Aaaaaaarg.

Mom: Well, you know what they say.
Me: What?
Mom: When God closes a door...
Me: He opens a window. Lines from 'The Sound of Music' aren't helping me, Mom.
Mom: Sorry.

Somebody is undoubtedly trying to sublet right now, for much the same reasons. Seriously, somebody around there is going to offer a short-term roomie situation. Or maybe you have friends who are going to be two in an apartment, but might be willing to take a third for just a few months?

Where might you study abroad?

Yes - I was just going to post this. I guarantee you'll find a sublet situation for that semester, or find someone to sublet an apartment in the spring.

Plus, you may even be able to find a month-to-month lease without too much trouble, especially in a college town.

I really hope so. Living on campus is just so damn easy. :(

I'm going to go to Paris.

From what I understand, everyone's all "you must rent for a whole year, not even the academic year" but I guess I should start looking around.

Talk to some of the apartment complexes there in town. Sometimes they'll give academic leases--I had one for last spring semester--it just went from December to May or June.

That's a good idea, I'll give it a try!

How could you not get it? Was there a lottery?

I think some places like Gainesville Place, and maybe others, will let you live there for a semester. I think.

Yeah, it's the same thing as last semester: you enter, they draw numbers, and like, two hundred people don't get it. Aaarg.

That's so weird. I've never heard of anyone not getting the lottery before!

Paige didn't get it either. This is just so frustrating. I just wanted housing for one more damn semester. And now I'm going to have to get an apartment for one semester and it's going to be hella expensive and this sucks sucks sucks.

That is so strange. I'm really sorry! Maybe you and Paige can live together, t hough?

I don't know. I'm really unhappy about this.

I'm really sorry. I really wish there was something I could do.

Try searching out roommates on Craigslist or roommate finders-- you'll probably be able to find something that's month to month (if a little more expensive) there.

Good luck!

Thank you, Milla. I'll take that into consideration.

Firstly, I hope you're feeling better! :-)

Secondly, I second/third/fourth/whatever the "don't worry" advice. There are tons of people who will have that situation... find out if UF has any kind of off-campus housing office and/or roommate website, and try there. And there's a chance that the study abroad office might have some advice, too. I sublet my place last summer and it worked beautifully; I doubt it would be any different for a semester. College towns are transient places... someone will need a room.

Aaaarg. I guess. This could've been nine thousand times less stressful.

What's college without unnecessary stress? ;-)
