Despite the fact that I don't have a choice (thanks, Housing!) I'm going to make a pros/cons list of an apartment. And be Roryish.

(I'm trying to be optimistic, here.)

Pros
- own bathroom!!! (or at least, not one with twelve other girls)
- washer/dryer
- proper closet
- kitchen
- door on bedroom
- possibility for real pet eventually
- space
- spreading wings, learning to fly, etc.

Cons
- Need to ride a bus to get to campus, most likely
- Therefore need to wake up earlier to go to class
- Not on campus, therefore eating on campus would be reduced to lunches and early dinners
- Unable to visit with people on campus, such as Melissa, in same manner
- More expensive
- Leases and signing things and whatnot

Help me out, guys. Pros! Pros!

PARTIES. Without RSOs.

And seriously, having your own place is liberating.

Do you have any idea about roommates yet? My place had a matching service, which worked out nicely for me... but I'd think hard before living with friends (you know what they say about never living with your friends, right?). On that note, try and find a place that will offer you an "individual lease" -- i.e. your rent covers your room and some of the common space, so you aren't responsible for roommates not paying, etc.

You could learn to cook. :D Giada's stuff is very easy, for the most part. And I actually save a good bit of money by not having a meal plan at all; the UVA ones are totally overpriced. I don't miss it at all.

You can recoup some of the expense by subletting -- for the semester you're away, and for the summer, if you want.

Most people consider not having to eat on campus a PRO. ;)

Did your mom ever get an email back from them?

I don't mean dining hall food, I mean like, the restaurants and stuff on campus. I have an account with money just for food on UF campus, so losing the dinner ability is not fun.

LOL, yes. It referred her to the page about the lottery system and how, duh, there was nothing she could do. It also said out of the two hundred people who didn't get it, five did last year, so basically there's a snowball's chance in hell for me.

What complexes are you and Chelsea looking at? This whole search bewilders me.

Yeah, I think lots of them have matching services. And most buildings that I've heard of have individual rents and whatnot, which is awesome.

I might have to learn to cook. That would be the main benefit of living with my friend Paige- she wants to go to the Culinary Institute of America, and she's studying to be a dietician. It'd be awesome.

What's an RSO?

I'm not much a partier... but I guess having the different environment might inspire me to want to.

The place we're looking at is called Chase Hollow, but I think you have to buy the place. I don't know though.

Residental Service Officer (on campus cops).

I don't party either, but you can at least have friends over and stuff.

Oh, faaaaancy. :p Well, I'm sure schoolwork will keep you on campus often enough to use that account. :p

Apartments are cheaper than dorms...at least that's why my current roommate is planning on moving out next semester. But I just read the "more expensive" point under Cons, so I guess that's not always true.

ERM, maybe you will like apartment style after all. Paris thought her life was over when she got rejected from Harvard, but Yale turned out alright. Things have a roundabout way of working themselves out (sorry if this sounds like a bunch of bull).

Here, at least, it's definitely not cheaper. I'm paying about $400 a month in my dorm and so far the apartments I'm looking at are $500 a month. Also it's a crazy hassle compared to the ease of living on campus.

But you're right. And I hope living in an apt is like going to Yale!

First of all, both on-campus housing and off-campus housing is crazy cheaper for you. :( I thought CA and FL were both all about overpricing and the like.

Unfortunately, that is the only pro you don't have that I would put, seeing as I currently lack personal experience. Did you consider being an RA?

I did, but it's too late to become one. Oh well.

It's crazy cheaper? What are you talking about? It's expensive as hale. Not like living in Miami or Orlando, but I live in the teeny little podunk town of Gainesville.

Hee. I don't know, you were probably referring to a different arrangement, like you were splitting the cost so it was only 500. For the really nice apartments across the street from the university: $815/month (for the Jr. one bedroom/one bath) to $2,260/month (for the four-bedroom/two-bath townhouse). Rents range from $725/month to $1,000/month at a just decent complex, which I think is a more accurate portrayal of pricing.

Oh, okay, I wasn't sure about the deadlines at UF. I applied, but if I don't get it. . . who knows. I might be asking you for advice come March. :)

There are places that like, $2000+ a month, but we haven't worked out if that's for everyone or divided by people or what, because... people can buy houses here for that much. Anyway. It's like, $500 a month for one person at the decentish places here, and it gets progressively more expensive, but I haven't done too much research yet.
