When I was in kindergarten, I told my teacher my uncle was an astronaut. This was a huge, untrue lie.

I remember telling her this monstrous lie and immediately being struck with guilt. As I could picture my uncle- I chose my dad's brother, my godfather as my mental uncle astronaut- floating around in space, I could also picture my mother coming to pick me up, and Mrs Grant asking her about her astronaut brother-in-law, and my mother totally blowing my cover. I was a tiny, five year old wreck for a few hours, picturing this lie coming to light. When my mother came to pick me up, I ran up to her all HI MOMMY I HAD A GOOD DAY LET'S GO HOME. This, of course, did not happen, because my mom was a room mother and therefore spent a lot of time talking to Mrs Grant.

So there I am, standing there, listening to my mother and teacher talk, agonizing over every word they said, my stomach in knots. It never came up, and I was very relieved when we went home.

I learned an important lesson that day: do not ever tell lies that are easily discoverable. If ever. I very rarely lie to people, because I was traumatized.
