So I'm having dinner with some friends from high school on Tuesday.



For those of you who are new to this LJ, I'm referring to the friends I've known my whole life, and they're not exactly friends by the true definition of the word. These are people that I have grown up with, and I have a lot of history with, but that is where what we have in common ends. At least, for me.

Also, as I'm thinking about it, I remember being in high school. I've been hennaing my hair, right, and I keep thinking how they're not going to like it. Then, I was idly wondering what color I was going to paint my nails, when I remembered how my friends didn't like red or pink or fun colors, I'd have to do a neutral. AND I'M THINKING THIS LIKE IT'S NORMAL. I would paint my nails pink and endure their criticisms, before caving and just wearing beige. I dyed my hair and dealt with their snide comments. It's not that they're terrible people, it's just that they have different aesthetic ideals, and I lived with them for so long that now when confronted with the idea of seeing them I'm kind of anxious.

(I know this isn't that bad, at all, but it's so weird to feel this way! I AM A GROWN UP, GODDAMMIT, I AM SUPPOSED TO BE ABOVE THIS.)

It is okay! I worry that my friends from high school won't like me because I'm not married. You are a wonderful person, mon abeille, and they can piss off if they don't like your fun nail polish. This isn't Mean Girls.

Good luck! It's not high school anymore, so maybe they've changed a little bit. Plus, word to not caring what they think! Paint your nails red. It's almost like, "Look, I still like it, and what you said about red nails didn't bother me!" If they say something, just brush it off. Like you said, they aren't your besties.

I'm glad to see you're going to have dinner with them, though. I think the whole time, you'll all be so busy trying to catch up that there won't be any attempt to criticize anyone. Who knows--maybe you'll have fun! :D

I'm hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst.

I'm glad to see them, in that I want to know what they're up to, but I'm like, miserable at the idea that I (a) don't have a job (b) no plans for furthering my education (c) no relationships (d) NO NOTHING I AM NOT IMPRESSIVE IT IS THE WORST. Ugh.

Lol, right? I don't know where I heard this, but I remember some high school teacher making the comment "I've been out of high school for fifteen years and I still want to be cool." That shit never goes away.
