Siendo Cubano
Feb. 27th, 2005 10:20 pmMonica deemed the name 'Marianela' "not terrible" so I feel better.
Spent the whole day either getting ready for the reunion or at the reunion.
It wasn't so bad- about 120 people were there, and I knew about 30 of them, and some people knew me and I didn't know them, and we all had nametags. I got to hang out with my cousins and my second cousins. One of my dad's cousins had just adopted two little kids from Russia, which was greatly interesting. I hung out a lot with Natali and my second cousin Carolina.
The entire thing was just SO Cuban- they cooked the pigs in the caja china. I am so not kidding. A whole pig. In a big box with coals on top. Lechon. Lots of lechon. All the speeches were in spanish, and all the music was- it was just SO cuban. All the names, madre de dios- Aida Elena, Ana Maria, Maria Cristina, Lilita, Larisa (although that's Russian,) Natali, Jorge Manuel, Carlitos, Jose Miguel, Miguelito... it was crazy.
Fun, though. They want to do it again next year, which should be... interesting.
The best were all the old pictures. Old, old relatives and old pictures of my family- the wedding pictures of my grandparents- my grandmother was seventeen, my age. So pretty and handsome they were- an entirely different era. Mercedita, the sister that died before my father was born, pictures I had never seen of her and a doll and looking like a little princess. My father's baptism, my grandfather in uniform.
Best of all? I have a very pretty family. I like that.
