So, grown-ups are right. DMVs really are of the devil.

I got up at 6:30 this morning. I was at the DMV before 7:30.

And I was there until about 11:30.

First the computers and whatever were down, so we were all backed up for about an hour and a half. Then they kept taking people with appointments, and then other people, and gah.

The formula for the boredom quota is:

number of hours slept x number of yawns per hour
                     number of amusements

Which, in my case was roughly

4 x 500
     1

And you all can do the math.

I was very bored.

Half way through, Ma got mad at me and stopped talking to me... so there I sat. Bored. And exhausted.

Finally, they called me.

Dude. It might be sideways, and it might be ugly- but I now have a driver's permit, complete with awesome movie-star quality me on it.

I mean, it is honestly the best picture ever taken of me professionally since I was about three years old. I don't know how it happened.

Anyway. This afternoon, I also drove for the first time. Ever.

I didn't hate it, exactly. I liked being in control, but I hated not having complete control, because I'm a perfectionist, and not being able to park inside the lines or make close turns IRKED ME so much. And then Nica told me I was turning the wheel wrong all along. Ah well. I drove, and no one died!

DMVs are awful awful awful places. If I never had to go back there, it would be too soon

In CT, they don't have photos on driver's permits, but I had a non-driver's ID for a while, and that was one of the best photos that had been taken of me since third grade. It was rather strange ;p

First time driving is scary, nerve-wracking, and when you look back on it, hilarious. The first time I drove (so long ago in October! ;p), I just missed ramming the car into a tree ;p

But you pick up most of it really quickly. It's mostly just a matter of refining how you do stuff and learning angles and all the rules of the road and such.

I've had my permit for nearly eight months now, and I still can't park inside the lines with my rents' car (which happens to be a monstor SUV), but I can park just fine with the driver's ed place's car. Strange how it works out. But I definitely didn't have the guts to try to park or whatever first time out- I went around the circle in front of our house a couple times ;p

But anyway CONGRATS ON HAVING YOUR PERMIT!

Congratuations!

Driving is definitely scary at first... but just take it slow and get used to how the car goes and turns, and when you need to brake and when you don't when you're going around bends, and parking. It will come to you. It took me forever to be able to park right, but one day, I really did just get it first time.

And get into the habit of signalling. Obsessively. Signalling is good.

And avoid Suburbans! They are the devil and they want me dead and I do not wish to pass on this bad karma to you. (You've heard this rant about how Chevrolet drivers hate me before, haven't you? If not, they do. Every single one of them.)

The weirdest thing ever is when you realize how naturally switching between the accelerator and the brake has become. It's like... involuntary, almost. The first time I got into my dad's SUV--a Durango, which is one helluva car--I kinda sorta drove on more grass than road, we'll say.

And it turns out I hold the wheel wrong, too. I think most people do. I just HATE that it's wrong and I've lazy-fied myself into doing it the wrong way. Argh.
