Challenge: Irina Derevko. Groceries.
Irina Derevko did not miss the mundane things.
Cooking had become a skilled practice she could not take for granted. Keeping herself and her possessions neat was easy, but for two others, it was tiring. Shopping for groceries in American supermarkets no longer impressed her, American extravagance with their food bored her.
And yet, she had trilled over new recipes with other housewives. She had dusted and vacuumed and swept every morning. She had clipped coupons and examed vegetables and cuts of meat. This part of Laura Bristow's life she did not miss.
She did miss the simple, elegant things Laura wore- the cardigans, the skirts, the peasant blouses and the pressed, even Laura's jeans, which she didn't wear too often. She missed shopping for clothes for Sydney: impossibly intimidating baby clothes, versatile onesies, dresses with smocking with matching hair ribbons, leotards for ballet and new dresses for Thanksgiving and Christmas. She missed the luxury of sitting and reading a novel, as she missed it during Sydney's infancy.
What she missed most of all, but would sooner die than admit, was the constant companionship of others- Sydney's bright chatter, Jack's intelligent conversation; Sydney's impulsive kisses and Jack's slow carresses.
What Irina Derevko misses, she is not allowed to consider important.
