I love Freddie Mercury. Like whoa.

Nica mentioned Dave and Maddie so I brought up David quotes and oh my GOD it's so funny. I can't wait for it to come out on DVD. Because seriously, it's one of the best TV shows of all time.

In other news, I loathe Helen of Troy.

Like, I never gave her too much thought. She was the pretty queen that was married to Menelaus that was taken by Paris and she was the reason for the decade-long Trojan war.

Now, I'm thinking that anyone that had a ridiculously bloody battle fought over them for ten years would have this enormous guilt complex, but not the Helen in the book I read.

This Helen had four children and a husband that loved her. Paris showed up and she made no pretenses- she fell for him hard and fast, and she betrayed her kingdom, her family and her people. Paris was all, hey, where's the loot? And Helen's all, wowzers, you're hot. It's right there. And then her daughter was all, DUDE. MOM. You so can't do this? And Helen's all, the hell I can't, chick.

And she's mean to the fictional character the book revolved around, and she was horrible and bloodthirsty and vain. She adored the fact that thousands of men and peasants died in her name.

I mean, I seriously never gave her much thought. I sort of figured she was like Guinevere- she was relatively happy married to the king, and then this dude came alond and GOM, I heart him!

And dude, I can understand her being conflicted. Duty... love. Duty... love.

But running off with Paris is one thing. Running off with Paris and looting your own palace is another. Running off with Paris and looting your own palace and abandoning your family is another. And running off with Paris and looting your own palace and abandoning your family and PRAYING that a war will start over you is insane.

Anyway. So Helen is definitely off my list of cool people. Paris too. Wuss.

Dude, what book is that? In the Illiad, Helen has a huge guilt trip. She spends most of her scenes lamenting her own stupidity and Paris' lust. She desires nothing more than to return to her husband. You sort of feel bad for her. After ten years of war, she's learned from her mistakes.

I like Freddie Mercury too. You are a silly girl, you and your Greeks and stuff.

I was gonna say that it was different in the original Illiad, but Jayen beat me to it.

IMNSHO, the story says more about male stupidity than anything else. I mean, it's not like Paris couldn't have gotten a girl elsewhere, right? But no, he had to go after a woman who was already married, and have a frickin' war start over it, because of she was beautiful. *rolleyes* (Is there even one mention of Paris loving her for her personality in the entire Illiad? I don't think so.) Good heavens...
