Was you ever bit by a dead bee?
Feb. 8th, 2007 07:25 pmSo, I watched "To Have and Have Not" last night.
Let me preface this by saying that Lauren Bacall... she doesn't scare me, but I'm not really her biggest fan. I can understand why people think she's so beautiful, and she was amazingly photographic, and I know that her looks will probably grow on me, That said, I didn't like her voice at first, and I've already come around on that. However, I do think the name Bacall is up there with coolest last names ever. And you wouldn't have known it was her first movie. Or that she was ESSENTIALLY MY AGE when she made it. And there is no way I could ever look that grown up.
Secondly: Bogart smiled a LOT in the movie. And it kind of freaked me out. I've never seen that happy of a Bogie.
That said, the movie was phenomenal. Kerlin said one of the things to look out for was the difference between Bogie acting in love and Bogie being in love, and wow. Just- wow. When he wasn't like, actually smiling at her, his eyes were. He was just... he looked happy to be near her. And the second time they kissed, when she pulled back, it really did look like he wasn't quite ready for it to end. And, and, and the chemistry! It's real, so I don't know if you can quite laud them for their acting prowess on screen, but wooooow. I spent the whole movie just wishing they'd hang out together on screen. I was a fan of the plot, too. All and all, at least an 8/10. (Betty kind of freaks me out, okay! She does!)
... Also? Slim and Steve. The nicknames were fabulous. And I kind of giggled everytime she called him Steve 'cause I thought of "What's up, Doc?" where Barbra called Ryan O'Neal Steve even though his name was Howard. And the line about the whistle! Oh my goddddd.
I might watch the second one tonight after Ugly Betty. I have a sinking feeling that suddenly I'll get into a Lauren Bacall phase. Mostly because I just read her bio on the Wiki. Bogie called her Baby, that's like... yeah, this is going to be bad.
