Was you ever bit by a dead bee?
Feb. 8th, 2007 07:25 pmSo, I watched "To Have and Have Not" last night.
Let me preface this by saying that Lauren Bacall... she doesn't scare me, but I'm not really her biggest fan. I can understand why people think she's so beautiful, and she was amazingly photographic, and I know that her looks will probably grow on me, That said, I didn't like her voice at first, and I've already come around on that. However, I do think the name Bacall is up there with coolest last names ever. And you wouldn't have known it was her first movie. Or that she was ESSENTIALLY MY AGE when she made it. And there is no way I could ever look that grown up.
Secondly: Bogart smiled a LOT in the movie. And it kind of freaked me out. I've never seen that happy of a Bogie.
That said, the movie was phenomenal. Kerlin said one of the things to look out for was the difference between Bogie acting in love and Bogie being in love, and wow. Just- wow. When he wasn't like, actually smiling at her, his eyes were. He was just... he looked happy to be near her. And the second time they kissed, when she pulled back, it really did look like he wasn't quite ready for it to end. And, and, and the chemistry! It's real, so I don't know if you can quite laud them for their acting prowess on screen, but wooooow. I spent the whole movie just wishing they'd hang out together on screen. I was a fan of the plot, too. All and all, at least an 8/10. (Betty kind of freaks me out, okay! She does!)
... Also? Slim and Steve. The nicknames were fabulous. And I kind of giggled everytime she called him Steve 'cause I thought of "What's up, Doc?" where Barbra called Ryan O'Neal Steve even though his name was Howard. And the line about the whistle! Oh my goddddd.
I might watch the second one tonight after Ugly Betty. I have a sinking feeling that suddenly I'll get into a Lauren Bacall phase. Mostly because I just read her bio on the Wiki. Bogie called her Baby, that's like... yeah, this is going to be bad.

To me, she has pretty much the textbook definition of a smoky, husky voice. In To Have and Have Not she still hadn't quite found a really good timbre for it (her voice was always low, but she did try and make it lower) but by The Big Sleep it's settled in perfectly. Ditto her acting style - one of the things people comment on her in this movie is that because she IS 19 and it is really her first acting experience (she'd been in a handful of Broadway plays, but only as an extra; her only speaking part was canceled after a week) sometimes it's just her and sometimes it's Slim. And that's both fascinating and ever so slightly disturbing.
Isn't Bogie smiling just...eek! But SO SO cute. He really was ridiculously happy. They both were. And it's just....yeah, here I go again. *dreamy sigh*
Later, in Dark Passage (not *that* great of a movie but parts of it are just fabulous) they have intense chemistry over the phone. If that helps. ;) But by that time too Lauren Bacall had a great deal more acting experience.
My favorite scene, hands-down, is the final one. When she goes to say goodbye to Cricket - "Are you still happy, Slim?" "What do you think?" and then she sort of wriggles across the room with that smirk on her face, and Bogie grabs her arm and gives her that look, all "I'm taking you home and putting you straight to bed" and AIIIIEEEEEE.
And I kind of giggled everytime she called him Steve 'cause I thought of "What's up, Doc?" where Barbra called Ryan O'Neal Steve even though his name was Howard.
Peter Bogdanovich stole that from To Have and Have Not, which is one of his favorite movies. :D
I seriously think Slim is one of the best nicknames *ever*. If I guy ever calls me that, it's all over. (Small tangent: the name comes from director Howard Hawks's wife, who was given the nickname by William Powell when she herself was 16 and hanging around Hollywood; he pretty much adored her and called her "Slim Princess" and it stuck.)
Bogie called her Baby, that's like... yeah, this is going to be bad.
You have got to read some of his public statements about her. And vice versa. They really, truly don't write love affairs better than this.
Okay, yeah, I could talk about them alllllll day. *happy sigh*
