Sep. 13th, 2007 10:42 amThere are certain things that are of the good. Things that make you say, "Yep, things are looking up for ol' Liz Lemon," even though your name isn't Liz Lemon, because whenever things are looking up, you refer to yourself as such.
A few weeks ago, the internet stopped working. In my panic, I said, hey, God, if you make the internet work I will totally go to church on Sunday. So God made the internet work, and I went to church. I didn't much like the church here before, but that Sunday, the mass was actually entertaining. I listened for the first time in years. Sooo, when my parents got a letter from the church (because my dad actually signed me up for the parish when he was here in March last year... yeah, oh, Papa Z...) saying that they were having a "Time and Talent" festival, my mom suggested I go, if only to volunteer at the nursery. Because, you know. I loves the kiddies.
So, I go to the Time and Talent festival. I meet with this pleasant man named Tom who suggests the nursery to me. So I give him my phone number and my email address, all the while thinking "yay volunteer hours." Because A) I am the volunteer queen and B) If I get to know families of small children, said families may contact me for babysitting jobs or whatever. Which is good.
I get an email today from Tom. He's all blah blah blah background check, blah blah interview, please open the attached file to see what the job entails, etc.
So I do.
... It's not a volunteer job. It's a paid job. It's a seven-bucks-an-hour job. It's a what-you-made-at-American-Eagle job.
Sure, I may need a background check, and yes, I'll have to attend a three hour Protecting God’s Children class (... mmhmm...) but SEVEN BUCKS AN HOUR. RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET. BASICALLY ONLY ONCE A WEEK.
Things are looking up for ol' Liz Lemon.

Date: 2007-09-14 03:40 am (UTC)I too got a job this week, researching stuff for one of my professors. Basically, I get to read books and summarise them for him -- but they seem pretty interesting (one is a history of the CIA) and I get $10 an hour, so life's good. AND I FINALLY got a social security number for my trouble!

Date: 2007-09-14 10:40 am (UTC)Working there = social security number because I am a lowly immigrant who needs a valid reason to have a SSN in order to be allowed to get one. For me, the valid reason is that they can't pay me without it. (The student visa I got last November allows me to work on-campus; the old thing I had didn't, so I could never get one before.) But now, regardless of my visa status, they can't take it away from me, and it's useful for lots of other things.

Date: 2007-09-14 08:49 pm (UTC)I don't know how much of the government social security program I qualify for -- I'm inclined to say I don't get many benefits. But the number itself is primarily useful as an identifier, for banks and phone companies and stuff. UVA used them as its student ID numbers until this year (they gave me a random ID instead).
