Mar. 20th, 2008 03:05 pmSooo, this is just me having creative differences with the Atonement people.

Book cover! Lovely. We've got some weird photoshopping with Cecilia over this field that Robbie walks through but overall, beautiful. For one thing, they're separated, as they were for 85% of the movie. Also, the bar between them has this tiny, fanciful Briony, and it's PERFECT. Robbie's on the beach with that eeeeeeeerie gazebo and all those poor boys and it works. They're meaningfully looking in opposite directions! He appears to be almost looking down at her, at the bottom! It totally works.

Soundtrack cover! This time we've got Cee on top, looking a bit too heroin chic for me, but whatever. She also appears to be in a lush rainforest, but it's pretty, so I'll allow it. Then we've got Robbie on a close-up of the field Cee was previously on, but also, pretty. Again with them looking in opposite directions, which I find meaningful! Same lone, almost-ethereal looking Briony, and, again, I love this image of her, because it makes her seem almost god-like. And, see, she's between them! Get it? Get it! She separated them and there she is!

GAAAAAH WHAT?
This cover isn't the same as the version I have, cause in the blank space next to the lovers there's another war-time Robbie. No Briony whatsoever. THEY DON'T EVEN USE THE TYPEWRITER FONT FOR THE TITLE. Also, while I approve of Cecilia's overall not-perfectly-polished look throughout the second half of the movie (homegirl was an important nurse, and, also, her boyfriend was off frolicking with death; she didn't have time to get her hair did) I don't like it on the cover. Nor do I think the man's robe is appropriate. ALSO THIS NEVER ACTUALLY HAPPENED. And they spent the grand majority of the movie apart! To me, (aside from my personal anger at the picture they chose) his feels overall like a fan put this cover together. Like, here's the blue border with some accolades, just slap in whatever you want. And not a photoshop-gifted person either, someone like me. This could've been so much more beautiful- there were more pictures of Cecilia looking that way, I'm sure of it! You could've swapped in different backgrounds for Cee and Robbie and maybe even used a different picture of Briony, all wee and small and white and pure. But goddammit, this is just wrong!
I feel like I bought the fake copy, and the real version with another cover is coming out. Just waiting to be bought, with it's pretty, meaningful cover. :(

It did surprise me, though -- it definitely wasn't what I was expecting after all the other cover art and posters that had come out. But, gah, the almost kissing and the lighting and her hand! It makes my soul fluttery.
