Aug. 15th, 2008 01:45 pmI just saw Vicky Cristina Barcelona and it was absolutely amazing. I am really not a good movie reviewer so here are my thoughts, in list form:
uno- I loved Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem. Oh my god. They were so amazing together. I mean, sure, they're couple in real life, and maybe that had something to do with how realistic their relationship looked on screen, but I don't think it was just that. Every little detail- the way they acted around each other, the way they picked up one another's little habits when they got back together, the way they stood next to each other, the way they'd exclude Scarlett through Spanish- it was perfect. PERFECT. Even the way they acted when they were talking about the other- everything was just exactly the way you'd want it to be. My mind is still blown.
dos- The girl who played Vicky, I think her name is Rebecca Hall, she was amazing as well. In addition to having fantastic hair, (I think she looked far, far prettier than ScarJo,) her character was only... oh, five jillion times more compelling than ScarJo's. I mean, sure, she was a cheater, and that irks me, but at least there was some character development.
tres- Cristina was everything I hate about people. No, seriously. And the narrator totally called her on her bullshit pretentious behavior all the time, which was great. Cristina's all, o woe is me! I am too artistic and special and to have a normal life and a normal relationship, for I am different and unique! Blah blah blah. Can't stand it in real life, really can't stand it when it's ScarJo while wearing ill-fitting tops. Look, I have a chest too, ScarJo, and sad though it may be, we need to wear different tops than our smaller-chested sisters. It's just the way it works. What looks good on say, Penelope Cruz, might not flatter you. I really do like ScarJo, and I even like her husky voice, but egads. "I am free spirited and shall fight against society and wear ugly clothes! I am revolutionary!" Only I don't think the clothes thing was intentional.
cuatro- ... Javier Bardem. Holy God. He isn't the handsomest man in the world, but the man has more charisma in his pinky finger than most men have in their entire body. Goddamn.
cinco- I wish the end had had more of a resolution with Maria Elena and Juan Antonio. Mostly because I wanted the whole movie to be them because apparently, that is my new thing- people who just can't make their relationship work out but are still madly in love, just not compatible. Sigh. I mean, Conversations with Other Women, same deal, just as amazing.
