I have had an AWESOME day so far. Let's list why!
1) I sold my LSU ticket for $90. Yeah, I probably could've held out for more, but I just wanted to get the selling over with. I am flush!
2) I got a 90% on my Spanish test. The Spanish test that I was kind of like "eh" when it came to studying and then panicked and studied right before? Yeah, that one. And Paige only got an 84%. It's mean to be delighted that I scored higher than her, but Paige always acts like her Spanish is far and away better than mine, so this makes me feel better.
3) I think I did good on my French lit test!
4) I also am inspired to write. This happens so infrequently that alone it's enough of a spark to make this day good, but it's just the pudding next to the pie in this case.
5) Also, I finished season one of Mad Men
I used to think that I was the typical viewer. Writers created characters that would appeal to the majority of their audience; as a member of that audience, I would agree and like and dislike what I was supposed to. Somewhere along the line (and possibly completely due to my association with the HMs,) I broke. I don't do what I'm supposed to do. Or, I just don't know what I'm supposed to do.
So, there's Peggy. I gather that we're supposed to like Peggy, and root for her. And I mean, I think she's pretty innocuous. I don't hate her, but I'll be damned if I can find a single thing about her that's likeable. She's got good ad ideas, that's cool, and she seems like a decent secretary, and I appreciate people who can do their jobs well. But everything, everything is overshadowed by her thing with Pete Campbell.
Because I hate Pete Campbell.
This is very possibly a stupid thing to say, cause there is a second season that I haven't seen yet and I am known for having to eat my words cause I say I hate someone and I really don't (*cough*Nadia*cough*) But I'm pretty sure I really hate Pete Campbell, because it's not one of my stupid hate reasons like "he's ugly" or "she's married to one half of my OTP" or "they came too late in the show's run." No, I hate him because of his character. I couldn't help feeling that I was supposed to sympathasize with his "moral dilemmas" which weren't so much moral dilemmas as they were "things decent people don't have to worry about, cause they wouldn't have put themselves in this situation to start with, as they are decent." He's a self-important, entitled son of a bitch and I hate him and I hate his brown-nosey voice and I hate that he cheats and I hate everything about him. Period.
I loooove Don Draper. He's a cheater, and that should really factor more into my assessment, but he's just... he's so cool. He's so good at his job. And he doesn't pretend to be perfect, which is rad. He pretends to be better than he is, which is good, but not perfect. And he's handsome as all get out.
And Betty! I love Betty. If her husband is handsome, then Betty is as pretty as the day is long. I think she's fairly interesting, given what little she is to work with. I think it's a bit weird that she wants to share things with her nine year old neighbor, but yeah.
And Cutthroat Bitch! I like her in this show! Which is shocking and yet delightful.
Joan is awesome and I love her. I like Roger Sterling and I like the boys at Sterling Cooper (for the most part. They're asses a lot, but a lot of it so damn period that it's like you can't get mad at them cause they can't help it.
I really, really like this show and now I need to download like, all of season two so I can enjoy it.

Date: 2008-10-07 01:44 am (UTC)LOL, I always consider doing NaNoWriMo, but I'm so... bad at writing on schedule. I promised people fics years ago and they still haven't come to light. But I'll think about it some more- are you doing it this year?

Date: 2008-10-07 03:44 am (UTC)I'm so glad you've given Mad Men a try. IMO this series is something special. I'm with you regarding many of the characters. I keep trying to like Peggy. In some ways I admire her and her pioneering spirit, but I'm not fond of her. I absolutely positively detest Pete Campbell with my entire being. What a weasel. Joan is always a hoot and never boring. Like you, I have a soft spot for Betty and I think she is absolutely stunning.
As much as I'm drawn in by this drama I find it hard to watch at times. Everyone's life is so depressing. And yet I find myself watching week after week. As sad as it is the production and writing is beautifully done.

Date: 2008-10-07 04:05 am (UTC)You're right. I hadn't thought about it, but the show totally is a downer. An awesome, beautifully done downer, but a downer nonetheless.
Weasel, that is the perfect word to describe Pete Campbell. Ugh. I hate him.
