sunshine_queenSo, I didn't know much about Liberace. I knew that he was super flamboyant and played the piano and was gay, but that was about it. So choosing the rent "Liberace: Behind the Music" had literally nothing to do with any interest in him, rather, interest in that god among actors, Victor Garber.
But this movie was seriously the best movie of my life. OF MY LIFE!
The real Liberace looks a bit like a Munster. I mean that in a completely loving way.
Liberace the actual guy: Clearly the sweetest, dearest, most adorable man ON THE PLANET when he was alive, if this movie is in any way realistic. He was so cute and happy with everything! He got a job, he was happy. He got a giant house full of piano-shaped things, he was happy. In a bubble bath, he was happy. He loved his mama. He loved things that sparkled. When people were all vicious about his homosexuality, he actually was hurt that people would be mean to him. He read that he was supposed to talk to himself in the mirror for confidence and he did. He believed in miracles! He was innocent and delightful and just as sweet as can be. So he's aces in my book.
His life: ... Kind of sucky. I mean, yeah, he was very successful, but he was soooo deep in the closet for so long and then he had that mean boyfriend that was all "I COULD KILL YOU" when Liberace offered to get him into rehab and he was heartbroken and then the poor guy died of AIDS. And his dad got Alzheimers and didn't remember him and that was awful. Poor Liberace.
The actual movie: ... No, seriously, best movie of my life. Yeah, it was a bit campy, but... it was a movie about Liberace. You really can't go too over the top with him as a subject. And seeing as it was a made for TV movie, all I have to say is this: rock on, Canada. Your made for TV movies trump ours by a lot. The transformation of Victor Garber (at... what, 30 or so?) to a youuuung man to an old man dying of AIDS? Was amazing. Even when they aged him a bit and you could tell Liberace had had work done and it looked like they'd actually done it to Victor? Amazing. And the sets and the costumes! Sure, some of it was lame but once they got the bedazzling down, that was it. So rad. And I mean... there were lines (that I'm sure Liberace must've said himself) like: "Would you mind if I went and slipped into something a little more spectacular?" and "I've been burning the candelabra at both ends." AWESOME.
Victor as Liberace: Victor is, in one word, amazing. He always is, but in this? Dear heavenly father. I hadn't realized how much he really sounded like Liberace until I found him on youtube and listened, but oh my jesus. And he looked like him! And every sweet innocent emotion on that guy's face! It was truly a genius performance. And the piano playing. And the singing. It was spectacular.
So... I seriously recommend this movie. Just the... I mean, the WTF-ery and the dazzle and Victor... no, really. Everyone. Get this.

Me: his piano. his microphone. HIS ENTIRE OUTFIT.
Nica: so he's like pimp luke?
Me: only classier. whatwith the rhinestones.
Nica: well, but of course!
