May. 4th, 2009 09:55 pmSo, my quest for the Best Sister Award continues apace. I am currently up 2-0 to Mel! Last year I made her a Castle Cake, this year I made her a RAINBOW CAKE.
And so I bring you Rainbow Birthday 2009!

An auspicious beginning! One egg, two yolks! I've never seen that before, it was very exciting.

So, I used two yellow cake mixes and split the batter into eight bowls. I chose yellow because... well, yellow cakes taste better than white ones. Also, they were on sale. I chose a mix because historically my family's track record with yellow cakes is not so hot. We're all about chocolate cakes here.

First cake! I really wish I had measured out the batter before pouring: I was just eyeballing it and it was really unexact. Looks damn neat, though.

Second layer! This one looks more like the Eye of Jupiter, which was not my intention. I also suddenly lost my ability to pour things into the center of the pan. This one was a lot less full than the first one, but it turned out okay.

Oooh, aaaah.

Cooked! I hid them in my bedroom while Mom and I went to the movies. We saw "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past" and while it was not the best movie ever made, it wasn't as terrible as the reviews have made it sound. Jen Garner was a delight, and Gretchen Weiners was hilarious. Hilarious!

Then we made sure Mel was busy in her room (studying for finals) and Mommy put a layer of Nutella in between the layers.

We've never used nutella between layers before, but it turned out damn good.

We frosted the cake with a light green buttercream frosting. Mel's favorite color is green.

Just vanity shots at this point. I did this almost entirely myself. If you look past the idea that I used a mix. Whatevs, y'all.

Mel! At this second, she had no idea what was going on, other than we had made her a cake and we were singing her happy birthday early. But then my mom said "why don't you go put on a tie-dye shirt?" and then the jig, she was up. Ma meant well but frakked it all up. Oh well.
GET READY Y'ALL.

OH YEAH. THAT'S RIGHT. I did not expect it to look anywhere neat this cool. I was sure the yellow cake would make everything look retarded, but nein! It just looks awesome!

Oh snap, check this out, man? It's pretty damn rad.

So there we have it! A rainbow cake for my almost seventeen year old sister. Incredibly easy to make, considering the reaction is overwhelming. And you can't taste the dye at all (well, I can, but only because I really hate the taste of food dye, but most normal people wouldn't.
When I uploaded the pictures I realized all my ~*~artistic~*~ photos of food and flowers were on my camera. Some of them are pretty rad, so I might post them. There are cupcakes and flowers!
