sunshine_queen: Tricia being fierce, as always. (Six- disrobe- misstress_tink)

Soooo... I kind of started watching Dollhouse today. I really didn't know what to expect going in- mostly because I've been reviling/relentlessly mocking the premise since before it premiered- and I'm still as confused now as I was before. Adelle DeWitt? Totally awesome. Laurent Dominic? I could totally start to dig him. African-American Gentleman who is Not Dixon but Should Be (and who I've been referring to as NotDix)? Nice. MORALLY UPSTANDING GENTLEMAN CAPTAIN KARL "HELO" AGATHON? DELIGHTFUL AS ALWAYS. (Yeah, he has another name on this show. No, I don't foresee myself using it.) The girl whose face I thought was really weird but who, upon watching her act, has won me over a bit? ... Okayish. Echo? Shut up. Shut up always. Clients who know what they're doing and then are weird? Shut up. Creepy mind erasing? Shut up. The fact that I can't seem to get it through my head that there is only one Echo and one Sierra etc etc and not multiples and if they die, that is, in fact, the end for them, aka, THEY ARE NOT CYLONS? Shut up, Self.

IN CONCLUSION: Nita told me it gets better further in, so I am going to get the second disc and... might just keep watching for Adelle, because she wears elegantly foxy outfits and has a very pleasant voice and looks like a very classy, very British AHC, which, win, AND ALSO ONE DAY BAMBER AND HOGAN WILL COME :-D. So yeah. That's me and Dollhouse.

(Also today it came out that my mom apparently has a thing for James Callis as Gaius? She really only saw him in the miniseries and then when he was on trial. I don't even know.)

YAAAY, DOLLHOUSE. You are a splendid person for giving it a try, and your reactions are pretty much exactly what one's reactions should be on the first disc, I say! Not the greatest string of episodes, until you are madly in love with said show and can go back and savour all the little character moments in between the mostly boring plots.

SIERRA. ♥ At first, I was just like, 'She's kind of strange looking,' but then TURNS OUT SHE'S AMAZING. She first won me as Adorable Geeky Australian Fangirl, and then she just keeps being wonderful over & over again!

Have you watched all four episodes?

Yep! Disc is completed. I feel like the second episode in particular was out of place- it was such a ... plotty episode? Kind of? It felt like it should've lived much later in the season. ALSO WHAT IS THIS EPISODE 0 NONSENSE I SAW ON IMDB. Also who is that creepy girl who lives across the hall from Helo? She should know that she isn't going to get anywhere with him, he only likes girls that don't add up in the usual way (WHAT GIVES PENIKETT?)

But seriously, I'd like to know why that disc had like, a cumulative fifteen minutes of Adelle DeWitt. It seemed cruel. And yeah, seeing picturesof Sierra left me totally cold but she has a really nice voice and can, um, outact Eliza, so.

Oh, Eliza! That poor girl. She plays such a fantastic skanky chick, yet when Skanky Chickhood is no more, things get kinda iffy. I think she does a really sweet job in episode four, though, when Echo gets wiped on the art heist job and she's just freakin' in her adorable tabula rasa state. Sometimes Eliza nails it. Sometimes -- she does not!

Sierra pretty much always nails it. That is why Sierra is amazing. (Among other reasons!) Dichen Lachman plays the doll state so beautifully.

Episode 1x00 is the original pilot. It is like 8937538957 times better -- friggin' Fox made Joss remake the pilot into that sucky monstrosity that is, unfortunately, the first episode -- but it also gives away like half a season's worth of plot twists in one go. It's on the last disc, so if you make it that far, you're in for a treat! If nothing else, Eliza's hair is especially enviable in it.

Creepy Neighbor Girl is Mellie, and she's friggin' darling! It's possible she just seems creepy at first, but oh, I love her. Miracle Laurie just plain radiates vibes of sweethearthood. Also, I am maybe a little more inclined than most to root for the Awkwardly Pining Chick. Ya ya!

Hahaha, poor Tahmoh is so typecast with his ladyloves!

THERE SHOULD ALWAYS BE MORE ADELLE DEWITT. Just as a rule. But what is there is glorious. She has some pretty goddamn fabulous stuff coming up on disc two, don't you worry. Of course, I am slightly biased and therefore regard every time she is onscreen as goddamn glorious, but the point is, I'm pretty sure she's there more on disc two! Episode six is Where Stuff Gets Real, and episode seven is One Of The Best Things To Ever Happen In My Life, so there are some good times ahead!

I WANT TO KNOW IMMEDIATELY WHAT THIS 'BEST THING' IS THAT IS COMING UP. Because, quite frankly, in the realm of GREATEST THINGS, nothing in the universe should top this glory.

I CAN'T SPOIL IT! It's good. I promise.

(OHHHH HELLO THERE BSTAR OTP! ♥ Sigh, I wish Dollhouse would end with Adelle and Dominic standing out on a pretty green vast expanse of land all kissing and together and not dead. Battlestar Galactica should never be the more pleasant alternative in terms of anything! Damn it all, DHizzle, you are not supposed to have more soul-crushing power than Battlestar effing Galactica! Nothing is!!!)

p.s. Your layout always makes it glaringly & embarrassingly apparent how frequently I feel the need to express myself via italics.

From: [identity profile] sunshine-queen.livejournal.com
I spend my life overusing italics. Also, do you mean my layout of the best couple to exist? Because THEY ARE WORTHY OF ITALICS ALWAYS.

From: [identity profile] dollsome.livejournal.com
Because somehow the format puts all my italics in orange! However: you know I am not complaining about The Best Couple To Exist. That would just be loathsome.

Bwahaha, it still kind of cracks me up that Gaius/Six won you so fully! WELL DONE. THE CRAZIES ARE ALWAYS THE WAY TO GO.

There's some DeWitt/Dominic fanfic wherein Dominic haunts Adelle, head!Six style, and then also some where Adelle haunts him, and it always just makes me so happy. I feel like somehow these two ships just go hand in hand somehow.

I don't even know why they won me! I think it was a perfect storm of your enthusiasm, me realizing that my favorite piece of music WAS LIKE THEIR THEME, and the rewatch wherein I acknowledged how gorgeous Tricia is.

Also, he's a Spylon. That's how.

Joss, man. And not only Joss, but jaded Joss. Broken Joss. Joss who's been thwarted again. This man has nothing to lose. And lots of bitterness to take out. It's like, he went CRAZY MERCILESS at the end of Angel because it was unjustly canceled, and Angel was on for five years.

In conclusion: I fear tomorrow, extremely!

But why is he going to be mean to you! You watched it! He should want it to be spectacular so Fox feels stupid for thwarting him!

The whole thing about Dollhouse for me is that I ENJOY it and I wanted it to do so well... but I kind of feel like this thing would be 180 million times better if Sarah Michelle Gellar was Echo. There's just a lot that Eliza can't emote. Speaking of Eliza, I'm getting followed on Twitter by an Eliza stalker who keeps trying to get DH back on air because he loves her and wants to give her a gift. CREEPY.

I actually couldn't believe that Sierra was good. Dichen Lachman was pretty much soul-destroyingly terrible on Neighbours, and when I heard she was cast I was like,"... oh GOD NO." But she's awesome!

Date: 2010-01-28 08:54 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sunshine-queen.livejournal.com
LOL, do they think you can somehow help them achieve their worthwhile and not at all creepy goal?

I feel like there are a lot of little missteps and then like, the enormous one of casting Eliza. Which makes me feel terrible, because it's not that she's a terrible actress! She's just... not the best. Poor girl.

Date: 2010-01-28 09:00 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dollsome.livejournal.com
And then she's surrounded by amazing actors who just get amazinger, so you just want to watch everybody else, and it's like ... poor adequate Eliza.

However, when she's imprinted as a character that is somehow slutty, that almost always promises good times! So at least there's that constant to fall back on. There's a season two episode where she's a skanky college bimbo a professor orders so he can teach her about Chaucer in a dirty fashion, and it is SUCH GOOD TIMES. The dialogue in that one is just hilarious Jossian beauty to the max.

From: [identity profile] sunshine-queen.livejournal.com
That is absolutely damning with faint praise. Poor Eliza!

(But seriously, Joss, stop trying to make Eliza happen! It's not going to happen!)

Echo is DEFINITELY the weakest character on the show. Which is, to say the least, unfortunate.

Date: 2010-01-28 08:47 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sunshine-queen.livejournal.com
But how much of it is Echo's fault and not Eliza's? I know I read in at least one place that Tricia Helfer is the kind of actress who could do this character justice, because it requires totally becoming someone else with every new episode. Eliza Dushku has her talents, but they have limits. Also, she is no Tricia.

Well, yeah, Eliza's lack of range is what makes Echo such a weak character. It's not that she's a bad actress, she just can't play everything she was asked to do.

... Tricia would have made an excellent Echo. I mean, how many different Sixes did she pull off?

Red! Caprica! Gina! Shelly! Natalie! Lida! Sassy! That Six Natalie had to kill! Pilot Six! Knuckledragger Six! The Six that beat Athena up on Caprica! The Sixes who vote against Caprica on New Caprica!

LOTS, is what I'm saying. Tricia is the best.

That was me! I said it should have been Tricia!

Because I totes agree that if this show'd had a stronger lead, it would have stood a much better chance.

"(But seriously, Joss, stop trying to make Eliza happen! It's not going to happen!)"

EVERYONE has a thing for James Callis as Baltar.

Whether they choose to admit it or not is their decision.

True scientific fact.

Apparently she finds him "totally believable" as Gaius. I'm not quite sure what she was trying to tell me. I shall investigate and report back.

Well, good luck. I really found Dollhouse to be plain bad, no matter how many episodes I sat through. But Nita does love it, and she's gotten me into plenty of good TV. (Buffy. BSG. Need I say more? There's probably more.) So good luck, that's all I can say.

PS, I love your mom. Her BSG comments are always on the money.

Yeah, Nita and I have very similar tastes for the most part, and I do think Adelle DeWitt is pretty snazzy, so I'll at least try a little bit more.

Dude, if I quoted all the time my mom said something awesome, it would be like, the bulk of my entries. As it is, I'm like, people must think the only thing I do is talk to her. THIS IS FALSE. SHE'S JUST CONSTANTLY AWESOME.
