Things The French Love, or at least Like To Watch Dubbed Versions Of:

Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, which I have decided I must now watch
Monk
The Simpsons
JAG
Stargate
Merlin
How I Met Your Mother (I saw this on TV a few times and wanted to hug the TV. WHY DID I BRING NO HIMYM WITH ME?!)

It's super cold here and promises to get even extra super colder tonight. I'm going to the grocery store later with Rhiannon, the Welsh assistant who lives in this town, but that's not until noon and it's just ten now and I'm not teaching and I have no internet so I'm just sitting in the teacher's workroom, COME AT ME, BRO.

Next month I will definitely get the monthly metro pass that lets me go in and out of Paris without knowing exactly how much I'm spending, but since I didn't this month every time I pay for a round trip (7,90 euros, so about ten bucks,) I kind of cringe. I'm still waiting to get paid by these people and I need funds transferred to my French bank from my American one, so almost everything is going on the credit card and it's pretty awful, therefore I'm trying not to go into Paris unless I have a reason (to meet someone, to GET MY PHONE dammit) and as we learned yesterday, I am not good at just being on my own with no texting or tweeting or emailing.

(The biggest problem isn't actual internet access. I've been able to catch up on LJ or at least see some posts, and I've gotten to check facebook and all that. The problem is communication. I can't just IM my friends. I can't just check my emails. I can't just skype with my parents, which is the biggest thing for me.)

UGH ANYWAY I feel so weird just hanging out here!

Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, is AWESOME. You will love it.

I did a fair amount of ordering from Amazon.com while I was in France - it costs a bit more but you can get US DVDs shipped to you. I watched a lot of CSI and JAG while I was living there.

I love Jane Seymour! I love Joe Landa! I LOVE THE IDEA OF THE PREMISE. I don't know what's taken me so long.

I'm so cheap, yo, I hate the idea of buying a series before watching it, but I might just stoop to it. (BTW, just so you know, whenever I'd call my mom to cry about France or whatever, she quoted you like a thousand times because she was reading my LJ. She thinks you're an awesome person to listen to.)

I was into that show first-run, HARDCORE. If we'd had internet at the time, that would've been my introduction to fandom.

I'm glad I'm saying something useful. :)

I just remembered! I can't remember the name of the store, but there was an awesome scifi store in Paris when I was there in 2003. It was part of a chain - there was one in Poitiers too. There was one on the corner by the Musee de Cluny (which if you haven't been to is my favorite museum in the whole world). It was the corner nearest the medieval herb garden.

I did some Googling and it might have been the chain store Album? http://www.album.fr/ It would be your source for French BSG stuff if you just want to go and check it out. :)

Neat! Thanks for the link!

Also, I really have no idea how I managed not to watch DQMW all this time. It is everything I love about everything, ever.

Heh! TV is the BEST way to learn the colloquial language - when I first went to Germany, I could discuss political theory in German NO PROBLEM because I read so much of it, but I had trouble with really basic things like the gender of milk because I'd done those years earlier in beginning German. I ended up watching TONS of Star Trek: TNG and learned so much German from the commercials.

I did notice some terms of phrase I'd never heard before! I wish Star Trek was on. I really wish they had BSG, that would be best of all.

I am so sorry it's still a little rough! :( I wish I could be there to help!

Are things in Paris expensive? In Greece, it was ridiculous. We looked at prices and went, "Psssh!"--and that was in Euros! We didn't even want to spend that number in dollah dollah bills, y'all. So, I sympathize somewhat. I know it's got to be worse not having been paid. :( Just remember, Roxanne, you don't have to put on the red light.

I'm glad there's some TV to keep you going, though! That was sort of our big thing, too. Every weeknight, we could depend on an in-English episode of CSI: NY. It just sort of kept us connected in a weird way.

The lack of communication, I can't even imagine. I'm really sorry! What's the deal with your roommates? I saw in one post that one is a crazy B (and not B for Beyonce), but that was all, maybe I missed something?! Will you have any other opportunities to be exposed to people? At least when you start working, you'll be a little busier. Does the school let you tutor, even if it's for free? That might be something else to sort of keep you occupied. I don't know! I'm trying, and I'm so sad you're sad. :(((((((((((

PS: Apparently the song is from May 2010ish, but Zaz's "Je Veux" is my new favorite song ever. They played it in Greece all the time on the radio!! It sounds JUST like an American/English song, BUT I CANNOT FIGURE OUT WHICH ONE. PLEASE HELP ME.

Love,
NicaG

MONICA LEIGH G COME VISIT ME NOOOOW. Things are so crazy expensive, and it's really sad when you buy something and then walk slightly further away and it's like, a whole euro cheaper. A WHOLE EURO. That is more than a dollar. It's ridonk. The money situation will be totally awesome once I start getting paid, even though I only get 70% of my first paycheck this month (and 130% next month... IDEK.)

I don't watch TV a lot on the actual teevee, though, because my roommates usually hang out in there. The German girl, Romy, isn't so bad, but omg the Mexican one, Vasti, is extra super strength bitch 24/7. I don't even understand. I've met a lot of other assistants, and I'm seeing some of them fairly regularly, it just sucks that the ones I live with suck, and now they're like besties. Whatevs. I haven't even gotten a legit time table yet, so asking for extra work just now would be probably ill-advised, but I hope to be able to do somethinge extra, beyond hounding the man in charge for internet.

I've never heard it! When I have legit internet access I will look it up on the youtubes. I MISS YOU, MOGRO.

I used to be so obsessed with Dr. Quinn. Michaela and Sully were my OTP back before I knew what an OTP was. Or had the internet, for that matter.

They seem totally OTP-able! I want to ship the hell out of them!

They totally are. ;)

I think most of the episodes are up on youtube if you don't want to spend the money on the dvds.
